ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS

:: GROWING CARNIVOROUS PLANTS

Why some plants became carnivorous?

These plants evolved to carnivorous habit in mineral salt deficient soil and water, in acidic or alkanile bogs and ponds. Transformation of their leaves into traps led them to catch several preys, ranging tiny protozoa to vertebrate such as rat. Absorption of nitrogen and phosphorus from preys provide a part of the elements that lack in their environment. More than 300 000 flowering plants are known nowaday and 600 are recognize as carnivorous.

Jean-Jacques Labat's advice to all novice and beginners. Be modest in your skills, patient, don't be discouraged, there is nothing pejorative to be novice. You must remind that my own experience concerned a carnivorous plant bought with a children magazine, Pif Gadget when I was 6 years old, this attempt was unsucessfull. You will get over the different step of cultivation thanks to your experience build over the year and the "traps" in growing species for experienced enthusiasts. Passion will be always the most important as well as for novice, enthusiasts or experienced enthusiasts. Loving these plants today and 20 years later is the key to success.

What is the meaning of the letters A, B, C, etc... noticed on the labels?

These letters refer to the cultivation mode of your plant by simply reading the labels. Here are their significations :
A = freeze resistant carnivorous plant
B = freeze sensitive carnivorous plant, minimal temperature > 1 °C
C = tropical carnivorous plant, minimal temperature > 18 °C

Upon receiving the plants, what should I do?

Upon reception, unpack the plants meticulously. See culture sheet provided in the parcel, done in a clear and precise style. Most of the sent plants should not stay in the orgini pot more than 15 days;  you have to repot these plants in a large plastic pot with a saucer or a water tank with a gauge. Don't be afraid about ridicule, you need 20-40 cm deep and a same width, for 1 to 4 plants. Repotting should be then done every 3 or 4 years, by renewing only substrate. These advices will help you to grow yours carnivorous plants dunring several years without any trouble.

What is the signification of latin names used for each plants?

All the living being are named after a binomial nomenclature by a combination of two latin words (established by Karl von Linnaeus, a Swedish naturalist in the XVIIIth century).

Botany isn't an exception to these rules. However, it does exist two kinds of nomenclature governed by their own code : the botanical nomenclature and the horticultural nomenclature.

The first name is capitalized and represents the genus, the second beginning by a lower case letter means the species. Some horticultural clones  hav the statuts of cultivar (cv.) with an epithet between single quotes in vernacular and capitailzed, exemple : Drosera 'Albino'.

At the botanical level (international botanical code)
The plants are designated by an universal name always in latin. You must read from leaft to right:
-The genus (capitalized), the species (sp.), the subspecies (subsp.), the varity (var.), the forma (fo.). Exemple :
Dionaea muscipula, belong to the genus Dionaea and to the species (sp.) muscipula, Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa is a subspecies of S. purpurea.
-x means an hybrid origin ex : Drosera x obovata (natural hybrid).

At the horticultural level (internation horticultural code)
- x means an hybrid origin. Ex : Nepenthes x coccinea (man made hybrid).
-'
' single quote means an officilay registered cultivar. Ex : Dionaea 'Akai Ryu'.
-" " double quotes means a characteristic observed in our nursery. Ex : Nepenthes truncata "red pitchers" which differ from the species by its red colored pitchers. Please note that this plant is not an officially registered cultivar, this adding is just a way for us to intend this diference without infringe the horicultural nomenclature.

Who is this?

If you see one day a blossom of yellow flowers near the plants bought in our nursery, it is likely an Utricularia subulata. This lovely small carnivorous plant usually squat pots of other carnivorous plants in our nursery.

Why are the garden and the nursery open to visit only two month in the year?

At the early running of the Carnivorous Garden, it was possible to visit this strucutre from april to november. We realized over the years a low activity outside over the summer holidays.

It could be explained by a lack of tourist presence in Gers during summer.

It's important to take into account our visit concept (we are responsible about it), with a not easy to operate: receptionist, management of garden visit headphones, garden and nursery guide, salesperson.

All these reasons lead to operating expensing that are not covered by entries and sales outside the months of july and august.
